Q) Discuss the features of the Agni-V?

Agni-V is the IRBM(intermediate Range Ballastic Missile),which is part of the IGMDP(Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme) that started in the july, 1983.


Features of the Agni-V:

  1. Mobile Launching:-

  • Agni-V can be launched from anywhere in India(whether it road or desert or village high school ground or anywhere) because it is released from the canister, which is mounted on the bulky TATRA Truck(which is specifically designed for missile launches).
  • Initially, the Missile will reach the height of 20 m from the canister due to the propulsion given by the gas generated from the bottom of the canister.Later, Agni-V initiates the three-stage fuel propulsion system. 


2. Three-Stage Fuel Propulsion:-

  • After reaching the height of 20mts, Agni-V initiates the First stage solid fuel propulsion. After using all three stage of Solid fuel, it reaches the height of 600 k.m.
  • After jettisoning the three stages, Missile will take the Sub-Orbital flight path and reenters into the earth atmosphere to reach the stipulated target.
  • Agni-V has the Carbon-Carbon composite materials to withstand the 4000 degree centigrade temperature.

     
3. Specific Features:-

  • Height of the Agni-V = 17 mts
  • Weight of the Agni-V = 50 tonnes
  • Range = 5,000 k.m with payload of 1.5 tonne and it can become the ICBM(intercontinental Ballistic Missile with lesser payload.





Who operates It:-

Strategic Command Force operates the Agni-V and its other variants under the Command and Control(c2) of the National Command Authority, headed by the Prime Minister of India.
